Blasphemy (impious and reproachful speech injurious to divine majesty.) This isn't a sin that you just stumble into like most of the common non believer, earthly, fleshly acts. This is a mindful, deliberate act. This sin is that of deliberate rejection of a divine miracle. It is the ultimate sin that by its very nature puts a man beyond the opportunity of salvation.
You may have heard many things described as an unforgivable sin. I've heard it said by some that suicide is an unforgivable sin. The fact is, there's not a list of unforgivable sins, there is only one that will doom your soul to eternal fire.
Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: 29But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
The reason for this is, the Holy Spirit is the worker of miracles. It is a knowledgeable, verbal, and continuous attributing of the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan.
In Old Testament times just blasphemy of God and or the king was punishable by death.
1Kings 21:9 And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: 10And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.
Matthew 12:22 Then was brought unto him (Jesus) one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 23And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
We see how blind these Pharisees really were. Why would the devil cast out his own?
Jesus’ miracles were authentications of His Person and mission as the Son of God. Rather than admitting that His supernatural power was a manifestation of the Holy Spirit in Him, they ascribed it to hell. Thus the fatal sin is the denial of the Holy Spirit’s testimony to Jesus as Savior and Lord, and results ultimately in their rejection of the Son of God.
Matthew 12:25And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? 27And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 28But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. 29Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. 30He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. 31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. 33Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
The tree is known by his fruit. The point of this verse seems to be that the good works done by Christ were evidence of His personal goodness and should have prevented any such blasphemous saying as that spoken by the Pharisees.
34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Did you catch that? We will give an account for every idle word spoken.
Don't you know this really raised their blood pressure. To have what they believed to be just an ordinary man speak to them in such manner.
Matthew26:63But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. 66What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
While the Pharisees asked for evidence of Christ’s claim, they overlooked the clear evidence that was to be seen in His miracles.
So what is Jesus talking about when He says, "That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."?
"To give account" means not simply to render a mere account, but also to suffer the consequences thereof.
"Every Idle Word" is a word or sentence that produces no good effect, and was not meant to produce any.
Such as:
Ephesians 5:4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient:
EVERY......
Proverbs 10:14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
IDLE......
Proverbs 15:2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
WORD......
Proverbs 15:7 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.
SPOKEN!
Wow. You know what? I've come to a conclusion after this study. I'm thinking now it's best to not say much at all......and also, our stand at judgment is going to be a quite lengthy process.
Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
That works for me......
